I was fortunate a couple of weeks ago to visit google UK’s headquarters at Buckingham Palace Road in London.

The offices have large glass screens at the front and inside there are british red telephone boxes and fluffy clouds that hang from the ceiling.  I was there attending GoogleLocalGov basically google meets local authorities to see how we can all work together.  The website can be found at google.co.uk/localgov.

Google presentations included: AdWords, AdSense, Search, Cloud computing, Enterprise, OpenSocial, YouTube, iGoogle; Android and Google Maps.

Overall a good day and look forward to working with Google in the future.

Why do you use twitter?

I was preparing this article as a draft last week and in the meantime i saw a tweet from Martha Stewart asking her followers the question why do you use twitter? So the timing was impeccable i just had to respond in two 140 tweets (!) with the following:

i use twitter to 1) keep up-to-date professionally in the web field 2)keep in contact with fellow professionals

3) share my ideas 4) express my personality 5) hobbies + interest

The reason i had to tweet twice was because i thought …wait… my twitter usage has developed rapidly from the original aim to tweet for professional use i now also find myself using it for expressing my personal life.

Crossing the boundary

The original intention to use twitter for professional use only, quickly changed when it became apparent that if one posted only work related tweets it could soon become a robotic process with no real personality and that would certainly not be a true picture of me.

I feel i  have crossed the boundary with tweeting on work and home and this is how social networking succeeds with real people, real lives, real thoughts, real situations communicated over the web, it is what connects us all and certainly a boundary worth crossing.

You can view Martha Stewart’s survey on why we use twitter on her blog.

Film project: Us Now

Today marks the launch of a film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and the internet.  FutureGov is proud to be coordinating the launch of the film called  Us Now

In a world in which information is like air, what happens to power?
New technologies and a closely related culture of collaboration present radical new models of social organisation. This project brings together leading practitioners and thinkers in this field and asks them to determine the opportunity for government.

After seeing this short preview, I am now intrigued to see the full version of the film.  Apparently the full film will be available to stream online sometime today on the film’s website.

A blog most certainly worth reading, Liz Azyan – a PhD research student her blog features research on local government including citizen engagement and the role of social media in local government.
